American Association of People with Disabilities Summer 2016 Internship
Description:
The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) is a non-profit organization supporting people with all types of disabilities. They say they are a convener, connector, and catalyst for change by increasing the political and economic power of people with disabilities. I was part of AAPD'ss amazing summer internship program. AAPD selects students who self-identify with a disability from across the country and places them in various internship in the DC metro area. Interns are placed in congressional offices, federal agencies, non-profits, and for-profit organizations. Prior to the beginning of my internship, AAPD provides an intense educational orientation for us interns. We learned about the history of disability rights, how to ask and talk about reasonable accommodations in the work place, identity building, intersectionally, and met people with disabilities who have made an impact on disability policy. AAPD provided me with confidence, life-long friends and connections, and an amazing opportunity to intern for the United States Senate.
